FREE AS A BIRD
I love to watch / observe birds. (Whilst younger, I used to observe a different breed of birds!). I have love birds at home and I have seen the mothers hatch their eggs, nurture them and then provoke them to fly away. Once, I had given a young bird to a friend of mine. They both grew attached to each other. Even whilst studying, the little bird used to demand attention from this young lady. She would sit on her shoulder and peck her if she ignored the little bird for too long. One day the bird decided that she was not meant to have attachment and flew away! The poor girl was heartbroken and refused to eat properly for days. Attachments – this is the first chain that prevents us flying. Alas, we had the wisdom of a little bird who refused to be smothered by attachments (read love) and decided it was time to fly, let go of her chain of attachment and flew away. The little bird was Awakened that she was meant to Fly. She refused the seemingly good thing (read love) keep her chained forever. I had often wanted to fly as a Bird. To let my spirits soar and fly heavenward without a care in the world. To cruise effortlessly in the skies above. Have you ? I am sure we all have had the desire to Fly, to be Free as a Bird. No shackles, no attachments, no chains, no bondages. The good news for you and me is, Yes, we Can. I do not mean literal ‘flying’. But to have our spirit Free. Free of all bondages. All we need to do is to ‘let go’. Easy to say and easy to practise. Let me show you how. Let me give you an example which will show us how frail and silly our ‘attachments’ are. I used to see my son, Errol, as a toddler very attached to trucks. Trucks were his life. They were his inspiration. They were his passion. He would eat, drink, sleep and live trucks. He had different types of trucks. And he was attached to each of them. He could not LIVE WITHOUT THEM. He said, ‘Never in my whole life I would let go of my trucks’. But that went on for about 2 years. He then outgrew his attachment for trucks and went on to something else. Haven’t we all done something similar? At one time, one particular thing or person or idea seemed to be the very LIFE of us. We couldn’t live without it / him / her. But slowly we outgrew that and when we look back, we might just laugh and say – how silly that was. Let’s do an exercise. Close your eyes. Take some deep breaths. (have you been doing daily the exercises from last time? – I have had some emails from readers which are very encouraging). OK, do the same exercise of deeply breathing in, holding the breath and releasing slowly. After about a minute, think of someone very important. A person of great stature, very helpful, very loving and personally known to you. Think of a day he / she meets death (that’s a certainty, you see). Imagine the funeral – the tributes, the tears, the flowers, the crowds etc etc. Live the emotion of that moment. Go fast forward into the future, a year later, people have erected a statue to honour, anniversaries are occasion to recount the life of that great personality. Live the emotion of that moment (Is it as strong as the earlier one?). Go fast forward 50 years. How strong is the memory and the emotion. (The memory fades and the emotion fades). Go forward another 100 years. Perhaps the history books still mention the personality (if some new education minister has not tried to pervert history). What is the emotion of this person or his/her death. Surprised, there is none? Now imagine yourself to be that person. And go through all the steps. This exercise is called a Perspective exercise. When we see things in perspective of space and time, the emotional representations and emotional attachments in our minds weaken. We see things as they are and not as we have emotionally made them out to be. We can let GO of our attachments, so tied by emotional ropes. We can LIVE – perhaps for the first time our spirit will feel the FREEDOM of letting go of our attachments. Free as a Bird. Free to soar the heavenly heights. In the (slightly modified) words of Buddha, ‘the root of suffering / sorrow is desire and attachments and the uprooting of sorrow is the uprooting of attachments.
