TEACH US LIFE, TEACHERS

This month we focus on Teachers.
Teachers who teach – Love and Life.
Teachers who teach – Hatred and Death.
Teachers who teach – Non gospel values. 
The parents are the first teachers of a child. They teach the child the arts and sciences of living. From how to walk, talk, eat etc to how to make a living, what are the values of life, what is right and wrong etc. Sometimes they follow the teaching as they have learnt from their parents. Many of these teachings of tradition are good. In this age of Information Technology Outbursts, parents need to be a bit careful. Children will ask WHY and WHY NOT. Today’s children have a scientific temper, which is good. Parents should be sure to test and verify the information they give children.

Example – we hear parents telling children about – don’t get wet in the rain, if a black cat crosses your path its bad luck, if you go out in the night, the bogey man will come and catch you. Till a certain age a child may blindly accept these things. But after a certain age, they will question. (God help those children who have been so beaten into subservience that they never dare to question). This is where the parents need to sit and dialogue and explain and teach the children. (Warning Parents – sharpen up your knowledge and discard your unscientific and unspiritual RULES).

Children learn from imitation. Sometimes our actions and words don’t jell. Children end up confused. E.g. We tell children, don’t tell lies. Then, sometimes, we tell them, ‘if there’s a knock on the door, say – my parents have gone out.’ They can’t make sense out of this dichotomy. Obey my rules – Speak Truth (but my other rule tells you to tell lies). Amusing to hear sometimes, children say, “My mamma told me to tell you she is not at home.”!! Blessed are the children who have parents, who TEACH with their lifestyles. These are the parents who teach LOVE and LIFE.

We also need to be aware that there are ‘other’ teachers who spread Hatred and Death (because hatred does lead to death). Some of these teachers teach in the name of religion. Others in the name of caste, creed, colour, class. But their teaching is of non-tolerance, non-acceptance which breeds Death. You don’t need to look far at US, Iraq, London. Who knows, you may even find them in Goa, in your neighborhood, your home. (maybe a bit in ourselves, sometimes?!).

There is yet a third type of Teachers, who will profess they don’t teach Hatred and Death. They teach materialism. They teach consumer-hunger. They teach material-greed. Look at some of the ads today. Sadly quite a few of those are targeting our younger generation. They teach WANT, DESIRE, for power etc. They teach restlessness – which (according to them) is satisfied by consuming their product. Let’s be aware of these teachings. Though they may not be one of hatred and death, they are certainly not of Love and Life.
Please continue with the exercises from the previous issues because they will help us to remain constantly AWARE of what we are being fed (consciously and sub consciously), more importantly of the Values our children are fed. Lets not forget the Christ, Buddha, Ram, Osamas, Gandhijis, were also once children and they were once TEACHEABLE and were taught certain Values and Ideologies which influenced and shaped their lives, nay, not just their lives but those of most of the human race.
