TIME MANAGEMENT
Time and Tide waits for no man. Hence we need Time Management. Imagine a fisherman who goes out to sea every morning, gets his day’s catch, sells some of them in the market, buys his resources, comes home, cooks and goes to sleep (the proverbial afternoon siesta – which the Goans are famous for). He then gets up, sits by the shore, plays with his family, does some household chores, has his meal at sundown and goes off to sleep. This man does not have a calendar, a watch, a timetable, a secretary, an organizer, a cell phone. But the man is blissfully happy. He enjoys his family life, his social life, his religious life etc. Now tell me, does such a person need Time Management. The answer would be, of course not. It does not really matter whether he is 20 minutes late or one hour late to catch his fish. (The fish do not have a watch / calendar either!). It does not matter whether his lunch is at 12 noon or 1 pm. He eats when his is hungry or when his wife serves him. Now take another scenario. There is this Mr Fernandes. He has a breakfast meeting at 730 am sharp with the Executives of his Sales Team. They eat and discuss (or is it the other way around) and wind up at 830, when the team leaves for the field. At 10 am he has a meeting with the Vice President of the company. At 1130, he meets his Data managers. At 1 pm he has lunch with some visiting dignitaries. At 330 pm he has to present a paper on Managing Resources. At 6 pm he meets with his social friends for a quick drink. At 8 pm he has to take his wife and children for a party. Now I ask you, does this man need Time Management. I am sure you will give an emphatic Yes. Time Management has 2 aspects, as I see it. One is Life Management and the other is Day to day management. We can only have proper time management when we have an overall Life Management plan in place. Let me explain. An ordinary man with an ordinary job. Lets suppose his friends call on him and ask him to go with them. He goes. He misses work. One day his wife asks him to stay at home and he agrees. He misses work. His children ask him to stay back and help with their exams. He agrees and misses work. His friends call him and ask him to go for a game. He does and misses work. The church people and some social work group ask him to help. He goes and misses work again. He does not say “No” to anyone, he obliges everyone. And then because of his frequent absenteeism, he loses his job. His friends ask him to come to a bar and get drunk to drown his sorrows. He agrees. Now he has no job and he is in addiction. Finding him intolerable at home, his wife and children leave him. Look at his plight. This man had no Life Management plan (by whatever name you call it). He didn’t have his priorities right. Since he didn’t have any priorities, he was prey to anyone who called him. If his priorities were set, he would have the gumption to say NO. He would have put his family, his job, his friends, his social network in the correct positions and allotted time to each in proper sequence and conversely if he no time to spare, he would have politely said, ‘Sorry, this activity does not fit in my overall plan for my life and the vocation I have chosen, so I cannot come with you.’ And his friends would have respected his No.
